1- A man and a young teenage boy checked into a hotel and were shown to their room. The receptionist noted the quiet manner of the guests and the pale appearance of the boy. Later, the man and boy ate dinner in the hotel restaurant.
The staff again noticed that the two guests were very quiet and that the boy seemed disinterested in his food.
2- After eating, the boy went to his room and the man went to ask the receptionist to see the manager. The receptionist initially asked if there was a problem with the service or the room, and offered to fix things, but the man said that there was no problem of the sort and repeated his request. When the manager appeared, he took him aside and explained that he was spending the night in the hotel with his fourteen-year-old son, who was seriously ill, probably terminally so.
3- The boy was very soon to undergo therapy, which would cause him to lose his hair. They had come to the hotel to have a break together and also because the boy planned to shave his head, that night, rather than feel that the illness was beating him. The father said that he would be shaving his own head too, in support of his son. He asked that staff be respectful when the two of them came to breakfast with their shaved heads.
4- The manager assured the father that he would inform all staff and that they would behave appropriately. The following morning the father and son entered the restaurant for breakfast. There they saw the four male restaurant staff attending to their duties, perfectly normally, all with shaved heads.

1- Un homme et un jeune adolescent sont arrivés à un hôtel et ont été conduits à leur chambre. La réceptionniste a remarqué l’attitude silencieuse des clients et l’apparence pâle du garçon. Plus tard, l’homme et le garçon ont dîné dans le restaurant de l’hôtel. Le personnel a de nouveau remarqué que les deux clients étaient très silencieux et que le garçon semblait désintéressé par sa nourriture.
2- Après avoir mangé, le garçon est retourné dans sa chambre et l’homme est allé demander à la réceptionniste de voir le directeur. La réceptionniste a d’abord demandé s’il y avait un problème avec le service ou la chambre et a proposé de régler les choses, mais l’homme a dit qu’il n’y avait pas de problème de ce genre et a répété sa demande. Lorsque le directeur est apparu, il l’a pris à part et lui a expliqué qu’il passait la nuit à l’hôtel avec son fils de quatorze ans, qui était gravement malade, probablement en phase terminale.
3- Le garçon allait très bientôt subir une thérapie qui lui ferait perdre ses cheveux. Ils étaient venus à l’hôtel pour passer un moment ensemble et aussi parce que le garçon prévoyait de se raser la tête ce soir-là, plutôt que de sentir que la maladie le battait. Le père a dit qu’il se raserait aussi la tête en soutien à son fils. Il a demandé que le personnel soit respectueux lorsque tous deux viendraient prendre le petit déjeuner avec leurs têtes rasées.
4- Le directeur a assuré au père qu’il informerait tout le personnel et qu’ils se comporteraient de manière appropriée. Le lendemain matin, le père et le fils sont entrés dans le restaurant pour le petit déjeuner. Là, ils ont vu les quatre hommes du personnel du restaurant accomplissant leurs tâches, parfaitement normalement, tous avec la tête rasée.
