1- Once upon a time, two cats were passing through a street. Suddenly they spotted a loaf of bread lying beneath a tree. Both pounced upon it and caught the loaf at the same time. “It is mine. I saw it first,” claimed one cat. While the other said, “I pounced upon it first and so it belongs to me.” After having fought for a while, one cat said, “Let us divide it into two and take one piece each.” “Indeed, a good idea,” said the other cat. “But how do we divide it now?”
2- A monkey sitting on the branch of the tree had watched all that happened between the two cats. “That loaf of bread looks good. I could do with it myself,” he thought. Slowly he came down from the tree and walked up to the confused cats.
“Yes, my dear friends! Can I help you?” asked the monkey. The cats told the monkey what the problem was and said, “Why do not you be the judge between us?” When the monkey nodded, the cats said, “Please divide this loaf for us.”
3- The clever monkey smilingly broke the bread into two pieces. But one piece was a little bigger that the other. “OH no! I will take a little bite of this bigger piece to make both equal,” said the monkey, slyly. He took a bite from the bigger piece. But, he had taken a big bite. “Uh oh! Now it has become smaller than the other piece. I will just have to take a little bite from this piece now,” said the clever monkey.
4- The Judge Monkey took another bite. The two cats sat in front of the monkey, seeing the loaf of bread they had found getting smaller and smaller. When the whole loaf was eaten by the monkey, the monkey said, “I am sorry. I was really difficult to divide that loaf. I must be going now.” And the monkey jumped onto the tree and was gone. “If only we had not quarreled among ourselves, we would have remained united and we need not have to go to the monkey and to become hungry now,” said the two cats.

1- Il était une fois, deux chats qui passaient dans une rue. Soudain, ils aperçurent une miche de pain sous un arbre. Les deux se jetèrent dessus et attrapèrent la miche en même temps. “C’est à moi. Je l’ai vue en premier,” revendiqua un chat. Tandis que l’autre disait, “Je me suis jeté dessus en premier, donc elle m’appartient.” Après s’être disputés un moment, un chat dit, “Divisons-la en deux et prenons chacun un morceau.” “En effet, une bonne idée,” dit l’autre chat. “Mais comment la diviser maintenant ?”
2- Un singe assis sur la branche de l’arbre avait tout observé de ce qui se passait entre les deux chats. “Cette miche de pain a l’air bonne. Je pourrais bien m’en servir moi-même,” pensa-t-il. Lentement, il descendit de l’arbre et s’approcha des chats perplexes. “Oui, mes chers amis ! Puis-je vous aider ?” demanda le singe. Les chats expliquèrent au singe quel était le problème et dirent, “Pourquoi ne pas être le juge entre nous ?” Quand le singe hocha la tête, les chats dirent, “S’il te plaît, divise cette miche pour nous.”
3- Le singe astucieux brisa la miche de pain en deux morceaux en souriant. Mais un morceau était un peu plus gros que l’autre. “Oh non ! Je vais prendre une petite bouchée de ce plus gros morceau pour rendre les deux égaux,” dit le singe sournoisement. Il prit une bouchée du plus gros morceau. Mais il avait pris une grosse bouchée. “Oh oh ! Maintenant, il est devenu plus petit que l’autre morceau. Je vais juste devoir prendre une petite bouchée de ce morceau maintenant,” dit le singe astucieux.
4- Le singe juge prit une autre bouchée. Les deux chats assis devant le singe regardaient la miche de pain qu’ils avaient trouvée devenir de plus en plus petite. Lorsque toute la miche fut mangée par le singe, celui-ci dit, “Je suis désolé. C’était vraiment difficile de diviser cette miche. Je dois y aller maintenant.” Et le singe sauta sur l’arbre et disparut. “Si seulement nous ne nous étions pas disputés entre nous, nous serions restés unis et nous n’aurions pas eu besoin d’aller voir le singe et de rester affamés maintenant,” dirent les deux chats.
