1- Long ago, a hawk lived on the top of a hill. At the foot of the hill there was a banyan tree on which a crow used to perch everyday. The crow was very foolish. He would imitate everyone.
The hawk atop the hill would fly down everyday in search of food. The crow watched the hawk circling in the air for long hours and swooping down when he saw his prey. The hawk gifted with eyes that could see long distances would spot his prey from the hill top and then fly down to pounce upon the prey.
2- The crow watched the hawk thinking, “Hunh! If the hawk can do that, I too can. What does he think? One day, I will show the hawk that I can do the same thing.”
A few days later, as the hawk was circling in the air, the crow decided to do the same. Suddenly a baby rabbit came out of the bushes. The hawk saw it and the crow too saw the rabbit.
Before the crow could move, the hawk swooped down, caught hold of the rabbit in his strong sharp talons and flew away. “Swoosh!” was all the crow heard as the hawk disappeared in the sky with his prey. “Hmmph! That is no great skill,” thought the crow, angrily.
3- Next moment he spotted a big fat mouse coming out of a hole. Without wasting time, the crow swooped down. Like the hawk he tried to catch the mouse in his claws.
But the mouse saw the crow and moved away, the crow crashed against the hill. “Eeeaaa!” cried the crow in pain.
Just then the hawk came flying down. “I hope, now you know it is not easy to hunt and it is not easy to imitate, either,” said the hawk and flew away.
There after, the crow never imitated any one in its life. It lived happily with the god-given abilities.

1- Il y a longtemps, un faucon vivait au sommet d’une colline. Au pied de la colline se trouvait un banyan sur lequel un corbeau se posait tous les jours. Le corbeau était très stupide. Il imitant tout le monde. Le faucon, perché en haut de la colline, descendait chaque jour à la recherche de nourriture. Le corbeau observait le faucon faire des cercles dans les airs pendant de longues heures, puis fondre sur sa proie lorsqu’il la voyait. Le faucon, doté d’une vue perçante, repérait sa proie depuis le sommet de la colline, puis descendait pour se saisir de sa proie.
2- Le corbeau regardait le faucon en pensant : « Hein ! Si le faucon peut faire cela, moi aussi je peux. Que croit-il ? Un jour, je vais montrer au faucon que je peux faire la même chose. » Quelques jours plus tard, alors que le faucon faisait des cercles dans les airs, le corbeau décida de faire de même. Soudain, un bébé lapin sortit des buissons. Le faucon le vit et le corbeau aussi. Avant que le corbeau puisse bouger, le faucon plongea, attrapa le lapin avec ses puissantes griffes et s’envola. « Whoosh ! » était tout ce que le corbeau entendit tandis que le faucon disparaissait dans le ciel avec sa proie. « Hmmph ! Ce n’est pas une grande compétence, » pensa le corbeau, en colère.
3- Au moment où il aperçut un gros rat sortant d’un trou, le corbeau fondit sur lui sans perdre de temps. Comme le faucon, il essaya d’attraper le rat avec ses griffes. Mais le rat vit le corbeau et s’éloigna, et le corbeau se écrasa contre la colline. « Eeeeaaa ! » cria le corbeau de douleur. Juste à ce moment-là, le faucon descendit en volant. « J’espère qu’à présent tu comprends qu’il n’est pas facile de chasser et qu’il n’est pas facile non plus d’imiter, » dit le faucon avant de s’envoler. Dès lors, le corbeau ne tenta plus jamais d’imiter qui que ce soit dans sa vie. Il vécut heureux avec ses capacités données par Dieu.
