1- Mary was a young girl. She used to get annoyed with everything. She had a negative attitude towards life. Once, when she felt that life was unbearable, she asked her father what to do. She told him that if she was able to manage and solve one problem, another one followed quickly.
2- Her father consoled her and took her to the kitchen. He asked Mary to take a potato, an egg and two spoons of tea leaves. Mary was surprised, and asked her father, “Do you want me to cook?” “No,” her father said. He then took three vessels and poured one cup of water in each vessel. The vessels were placed on the stove. Once the water started to boil, he dropped the potato in a vessel, egg in the second one and the tea leaves in the third one.
3- “Why are you doing all these things?” Mary asked, really annoyed with her father. “Just wait fifteen minutes,” said her father. The impatient daughter managed to wait for around 15 minutes. Father removed the potato from the pot and placed in a plate. He did the same with the eggs. He filtered the tea decoction using a cup.
4- Now, he placed the two plates, one with the potato and the other with the egg, and the cup of tea in front of Mary.
He asked Mary, “What do you see?” “Potato, egg and a cup of tea,” said Mary. “No, you are wrong,” said her father. “Look at it closely and answer me.”
Mary replied the same.
“Now touch it and answer me.”
5- The potato was cooked and was soft, the egg was boiled hard, and the tea carried a nice aroma. Mary couldn’t find the correct answer. Her father said, “The potato was so hard and strong before it was boiled; now it has turned soft and smooth. Also, the egg was delicate but after boiling it became hard. Sip the tea. It is delicious!”
6- Mary asked, “What does it mean father? I don’t understand!” “Each object responded differently to water. Each object was put under the same kind of circumstances, faced similar adversities, but reacted differently. The potato, when put in boiling water, became very weak. The soft egg became very hard when we put it in boiling water. And the tea leaves are unique. It changed the water itself, giving it a unique flavour and aroma! It gave something new.” Mary understood that we can create something new and unique even when we experience adversities.

1- Mary était une jeune fille. Elle s’énervait contre tout. Elle avait une attitude négative envers la vie. Un jour, lorsqu’elle trouva la vie insupportable, elle demanda à son père quoi faire. Elle lui dit que si elle arrivait à gérer et résoudre un problème, un autre suivait rapidement.
2- Son père la consola et l’emmena à la cuisine. Il demanda à Mary de prendre une pomme de terre, un œuf et deux cuillères de feuilles de thé. Mary fut surprise et demanda à son père : “Veux-tu que je cuisine ?” “Non,” dit son père. Il prit alors trois casseroles et versa une tasse d’eau dans chaque casserole. Les casseroles furent placées sur le feu. Une fois l’eau commencée à bouillir, il laissa tomber la pomme de terre dans une casserole, l’œuf dans la deuxième et les feuilles de thé dans la troisième.
3- “Pourquoi fais-tu tout cela ?” demanda Mary, vraiment agacée par son père. “Attends juste quinze minutes,” dit son père. La fille impatiente réussit à attendre environ 15 minutes. Le père sortit la pomme de terre de la casserole et la plaça dans une assiette. Il fit de même avec les œufs. Il filtra la décoction de thé en utilisant une tasse.
4- Ensuite, il plaça les deux assiettes, l’une avec la pomme de terre et l’autre avec l’œuf, et la tasse de thé devant Mary. Il demanda à Mary : “Que vois-tu ?” “Une pomme de terre, un œuf et une tasse de thé,” dit Mary. “Non, tu as tort,” dit son père. “Regarde de plus près et réponds-moi.” Mary répondit la même chose. “Maintenant, touche-les et réponds-moi.”
5- La pomme de terre était cuite et était devenue molle, l’œuf était durci, et le thé avait un bel arôme. Mary ne trouva pas la réponse correcte. Son père dit : “La pomme de terre était si dure et forte avant d’être bouillie ; maintenant elle est devenue molle et lisse. L’œuf était également délicat mais après avoir été bouilli, il est devenu dur. Goûte le thé. C’est délicieux !”
6- Mary demanda : “Qu’est-ce que cela signifie, papa ? Je ne comprends pas !” “Chaque objet a réagi différemment à l’eau. Chaque objet a été mis dans les mêmes circonstances, a affronté des adversités similaires, mais a réagi différemment. La pomme de terre, lorsqu’elle est mise dans l’eau bouillante, est devenue très faible. L’œuf tendre est devenu très dur lorsque nous l’avons mis dans l’eau bouillante. Et les feuilles de thé sont uniques. Elles ont changé l’eau elle-même, lui donnant une saveur et un arôme uniques ! Elles ont créé quelque chose de nouveau.” Mary comprit que nous pouvons créer quelque chose de nouveau et d’unique même lorsque nous rencontrons des adversités.
